Gum disease can have several causes, including medical conditions, lifestyle choices, hormonal changes and even genetics. But usually, the primary cause of gum disease is the buildup of plaque and tartar on your teeth. As plaque builds up, your gums react by swelling, which allows even more plaque to accumulate, in this case below the gumline. If your gum disease is still in its earliest stages, our dentist, Dr. Brian Han, may be able to treat you with a process known as a deep cleaning or scaling and root planing.
This treatment is done in two steps and usually does not require the use of anesthetic, although we will be happy to provide it if you request it. The treatment may take place over two visits and in some instances can be done in a single appointment. During the first step, Dr. Han will remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth both above and below the gumline. In the second step, we will clean and smooth the roots of your tooth, which will allow it to form a healthy attachment to your jawbone. Depending on the health of your gums, Dr. Han may combine this treatment with the use of an antibiotic.
